St Oberholz, a pioneer in providing co-working and community space in Berlin, is growing and expanding its activities to Friedrichshain. Astrid Pankrath, a long time design and fidel design consultant, is developing the new co-working spaces in Berlin-Friedrichshain. To sick to the strict budget, we deliberate create a multitude of spaces giving a plural chromatic experience during the working day.

For this project we are collaborating and starting from an existing open office space and transforming it into a vibrant space-sharing office. This project did not include floating desks, but only rooms with meeting and community areas. The rooms have been positioned along the north façade to get a cool and good working light and combined with the glass portal a good day/ sunny light enters the room which also provide a window to the community. The common area is like a large fonctional hallway, accommodating softseating area, informal meeting area, lounge and kitchen with a large dining table for the community.

re-Use

What is special about this project is that we are concentrating on maximising what is already there and working exclusively with reused materials wherever possible. The glass portal for example is a large position in this surface and are recycled glass portal from a similar office in Stuttgart. We integrate it into the project as it was designed. It is also a learning base and challenging in many aspects, such as adapting the project to what we found – so several redesigns, more improvisation during site management – delivery and supervision on site increase. So far it is still a learning process, and in terms of costs we are spending less on one side and more on the other. But we are optimistic and confident that it is also an attitude during planning, more on site and trying to deal more with the existing, is the first real re-use and effective impact on building footprint as well as costing…
